A story from the past........

Royal Leamington Spa Courier 21 July 1849 - Red Rain

Early on Saturday morning, the 30th ult., a shower of rain as red as blood fell near the village of Bonvilston, and extended from thence in a westerly direction over Llantrithyd, Flemingston &c, towards Llantwit-Major. It was so manifest that it impregnated the clods of earth, many of which were like ruddle. Several country people who witnessed it were dreadfully alarmed, imagining it to be some omen of coming misfortune, and very many who did not see it fall came in the course of the day to see the discoloured soil. A very severe blight took place the same morning, which has left its marks on the potatoes, beans, and fruit trees, and hung over the country till past middle day.

Great picture of  cricket teams from Bonvilston St Fagans & Peterston. Photo probably from around 1900.
Strange to see all the dogs and cats in the picture!
New beers from Brains Craft Brewery being served in the Red Lion. The first two were a bit powerful at 5.8% and 6.0% but I hear that there will be another in July at only 4%.

Talking of needing something new. This is a few slats short of a bench. We can add this to the list. By the way this is at the top of Maes y Ffynnon. No it's not a picture quiz!

Is this tree alive or dead? A bit of both I think. Planted in 1954 to commemorate 'Best Kept Village' maybe it's time for a new one. For those not local it is at the bottom of Redway Road.

1906 postcard showing Bonvilston from the West from a position just below the village shop. The building opposite the shop and the Reading Room can clearly be seen. The building further up the road is Panty Ffynnon Farm. Thanks to David Williams for sharing this treasure.
Are there any others like this out there?
Bonvilston Open Gardens Day today. Thank goodness the weather stayed dry. Some wonderful gardens to see.

Wonderful beer festival. Blurry evening. Timothy Taylor rules followed closely by Urban IPA.
It may be raining but at least the flowers are bright!

Grand day out at the Point to Point. Sad that it's probably the last one.
Great time on Saturday. Thanks to all those that came and those that helped, especially Martin & Paul on the BBQ and Joe & Louise. Great quiz.

Jubilee Party, today at the Bonvilston Reading Room. All villagers, friends and family welcome. Exhausted already. Hope to make it through to the quiz.
